Geography & Population
Mitchell County consists of 514 square miles situated in southwest Georgia along the east side of the Flint River. It is bisected by U. S. Highway 19 and contains 12 major state routes. Adjacent counties include Dougherty, Worth, Colquitt, Thomas, Grady, Decatur, and Baker. According to the 2010 United States Census, the population of Mitchell County was 23,498. Camilla’s population was 5,360 and Pelham’s population was 3,898. Baconton has a population of 915 and the population of Sale City was 380.
Our History
On December 21, 1857, Mitchell County became the 123rd county in Georgia. According to www.Georgia.gov, Mitchell County was carved out of Baker County in 1857. Historians propose two stories for the origin of its name; it is a reference to either General David B. Mitchell, twice governor of Georgia, or General Henry Mitchell, a one time state senator for the area.
Camilla serves as the county seat and is rumored to be named after the daughter of its namesake. Mitchell County is home to three other cities: Baconton, Pelham, and Sale City. Historically rich, the county hosts a plethora of locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as nationally recognized historic districts in the three largest cities.
